EIO, summary interview Layana
I have interviewed my mom, because she is a Muslim. Our religion is the Islam. This is a special religion to me, because I am Muslim self. In our religion we have the mosque, we have our book the Koran, that’s were we read in. We pray and do a lot of other things for our religion. That is why I also have chosen the celebration Suikerfeest. It is an important celebration to us. We celebrate it because of the Ramadan. Ramadan is a month that the Muslims are fasting because of many reasons, for example for the poor people. We are fasting the whole day; so we start when the sun comes up and we can eat again when the sun goes down. We have lots of other celebrations like Slachtfeest(Offerfeest). That is one of the important celebrations. When we are celebrating the celebrations the family comes together, and we do lost of nice things, like eating food, giving each other present and just sit and talk. We don’t have a special kind of food that we are eating that day, it is just Arabic and Moroccan food. There are not really important things, just that it is about family and that we have fast a whole month long. Eio summary interview grandparents Daniella What is her religious background? I am Catholic. How long has she been in this religion? Since I was baptized, almost my whole life. Usually people baptize their children when they are still very little, sometimes when they are just born. Does her religion have a Church? And if it does, what does she normally do there? Yes, my religion has a church. I go to the church on Sunday morning. First we have an old tradition with the ringing of a bell. Then we usually have a little bit of singing which I enjoy. Then the pastor will be reading a couple of scripture verses and possibly a psalm, and then often a sermon. The sermon will often be about the scripture lections we had on that day. Sometimes during the service, there will be a collection, so that the church can pay its bills. I find that very important. What are the celebrations in her religion? In it we attend masses, which are church services. We do confirmation, baptism, the procession, which is a public ritual. We celebrate the days of saints. We also celebrate the birth of Christ (Christmas) on 25 and 26 of December, the death and rebirth of Christ somewhere in April (Easter). When you have a celebration what do you do? We sing happy songs, we pray and we praise god. With Christmas for example we have a Christmas tree and it’s decorated with all kinds of Christmas balls and garlands (slingers) and sometimes there is play were the children play the birth of Jesus but because of corona we can’t do that now. Is there any special food or habit at the celebration? Yes, we are offered the Host, Bread and 'Wine' during Easter, for example. But it really depends on which celebration it is. Is there anything important in your religion I have to know?-Yes, I as a Catholic believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us. I believe he is our savior. |
EIO summary of Sinterklaas (interview) - Interview taken by Lucienne.
Sinterklaas, for us as a fully Dutch family this celebration is actually bit important to celebrate each year. This celebration starts with the ‘’intocht van Sinterklaas’’ which means the arrival of Sinterklaas in the Netherlands. This is usual taken in mid-November. We always go to the central port (haven) of the city. Then around a specific time, Sinterklaas comes with his helpers ‘’de pieten’’ on his boat into the city. It is always very busy with all the people and children that come and watch to the ‘’intocht’’. It is always fun to see the small children being impressed by everything that happens around them. Also, most of the children are dressed like the helps of Sinterklaas (pieten). When Sinterklaas comes on the land (from the boat) he walks through the city and most of the time to the central place of the city to ( in our town it’s a big church in the middle of the city). When he does this all his ‘’pieten’’ come with him of course. They always have a big bag of ‘’strooigoed’’ with them and hand everytime some of it over to the children they see. ‘’Strooigoed’’ is a mix of nice sweets and small cookies. At 5 December we always celebrate the ‘’birthday’’ of Sinterklaas we call it ‘’pakjesavond’’. It is always a nice and cozy night with everyone. In order for the children that still believed there is a very old guy buying gifts for all children in the whole of the Netherlands, the evening for us consists of our neighbour slamming on the front-door and leaving some presents on the doorstep. Then with everyone we always unwrapped the gifts and enjoyed the happiness of what everyone got. Interview - Grandma of Lina
It usually took about 6 weeks. Once in a while, when I saw a nice present or decoration piece, I bought it.’’
It was always a lot of work when I got my own family to care for. The preparations would take me a long time.’’

Choose 2 other celebrations and interview 2 people from a religious or ethnic minority and ask them the following questions:
|
We chose to ask questions about the Muslim celebration "Slachtfeest (Slaughter feast in English, we think)" and a western celebration "Christmas".
We interviewed two classmates. |
